Frequently Asked Questions
What to know before your first visit.
What is osteopathic treatment?
Osteopathic manipulative treatment is a gentle, hands-on approach to diagnosis and care. Using a detailed knowledge of anatomy and finely tuned palpation (touch), the physician finds and eases areas of restriction so the body can move and heal more freely. Learn more about osteopathic medicine.
What is a DO, and how is it different from an MD?
A DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) is a fully licensed physician who completes the same medical training as an MD — and can diagnose, prescribe and refer — plus several hundred additional hours learning hands-on osteopathic diagnosis and treatment. The difference is an added, whole-person, hands-on perspective on health.
What happens during my first visit?
Your initial visit usually lasts one and a half to two hours and includes a detailed history, a physical and osteopathic examination, and treatment. Follow-up visits are typically 30 to 45 minutes. Your physician will explain what they find and answer your questions along the way. See our locations to book.
What should I wear and bring?
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing — you remain clothed throughout treatment. It helps to bring any relevant medical records, imaging or test results, and a list of your current medications.
Does treatment hurt?
Osteopathic treatment is gentle. Most techniques are subtle and many patients find them deeply relaxing. Your physician will always work within your comfort and explain what they are doing.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on your concern, how long it has been present and how your body responds. Some people feel better in a single visit; others benefit from a short series of treatments. Your physician will discuss a realistic plan with you.
Is osteopathic treatment safe for babies and during pregnancy?
Yes. Treatment for infants and during pregnancy is especially gentle, safe and non-invasive. Learn more about care for children & newborns and pregnancy & postpartum care.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required to make an appointment. If you are currently under the care of another provider, we are happy to work alongside them.
Do you accept insurance? What are your fees?
Please contact the office nearest you to confirm current fees and how billing works. On request we can provide documentation (a superbill) that you may submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
